Adopt a Family for the Holiday

  We are adopting families again for the holiday season. We are getting families, older adults & a Veteran from the Carondelet Betterment Association and refugee families & older adults in need from the International Institute of Saint Louis. So throw a few extra items on your list to make this year better for some families & older adults in need. We will have a wrapping party on Monday the 21st. The Lhotsampa people are of Nepalese origin but migrated to southern Bhutan in the late 1800s. In the 1980s, the Bhutanese government stripped the Lhotsampa of their Bhutanese citizenship, despite families having lived there upwards of 100 years. The Bhutanese government made life for the group very difficult by outlawing their traditional clothing, burning their books and artifacts, and banning their Hindu religion.Violent unrest forced over 100,000 Lhotsampa to flee to Nepal in the early 1990s. They were not welcomed in Nepal either and consequently ended up in seven UNHCR refugee camps without citizenship or rights. The majority of the Lhotsampa resided in the camps for over 20 years before having the opportunity to relocate to a third country, such as the US.Chabi and Mangali lived in a refugee camp until September of this year, when they were resettled in St. Louis by the International Institute.This couple is especially vulnerable because they are both sick and have no one to take care of them. Both of them have very low English and are struggling to learn. Mangali is able to make it to English class here at the Institute but Chabi is unable to come. However, he would like to learn so beginner English learning materials would be a very helpful gift for him.This family would benefit from Rent ($350) and utility ($100) assistance. Grocery gift cards would also be very helpful (Shop n’ Save would probably be the best). Warm clothing and blankets would make great gifts for this couple. Chabi would also appreciate a watch, and some jewelry would be a nice gift for Mangali.
